Project 1:Uttarakhand Plantation Offset Project Through our partners we're setting up co-operatives with the farmers for the jatropha plantation on their fallow land. The co-operative will allow small farmers to participate. Plans include state-of-the-art cultivation techniques and high yield seeds and economic assistance to grow jatropha.
A jatropha tree absorbs around 8 kg or 0.008 tonnes of CO2 every year. 2500 trees can be planted in a hectare, thus, resulting in 20 tonnes of CO2 sequestration per year for the lifetime of 40-50 years. Moreover, each hectare produces an average of 1000 gallons of biodiesel per year and 3500 kg of biomass. By offsetting your emissions through this project you ensure that your offset purchases will finance the activities of jatropha plantation and potential biodiesel production. The plantation will begin in Uttarakhand, a hilly state of India and other states, where we've identified more than 100,000 hectares of unused land available for plantation. Uttarakhand government is supporting bio-diesel economy by setting funding research institutes for providing high quality jatropha seeds and providing incentives to set-up environmental friendly industries. Assumptions for this project: - 1 hectare plantation will help offset approximately 20 tonnes of CO2 per year for 40 years
Minimum plantations to offset: 4 Jatropha trees will help offset 1 tonne of CO2 emissions over its lifetime. Carbonyatra charges- 10% of individual offset charges Minimum plantations to offset: 4 Jatropha trees for Rs 750
Note: Carbonyatra.com and project owners will decide potential applicability for carbon credits and its benefits. Revenues and profits (after service charges) from carbon credits will be shared and/or invested in other renewable energy projects selected by Carbonyatra and project owners.
What you will recieve for your offsets: Certificate indicating emissions offset. Additionally, in an effort to provide transparency, project owners have agreed to put a name tag of each sponsor on each of the trees and provide a tagged picture of the same with the plantations on their website (all information will be provided). Please read our "OUR CARBON OFFSET GUIDE" section for programme details.
