India's largest public-sector undertaking Indian Railways will setup two wind farms each of 10.5MW capacities in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, for Rs.140 crore.

The plants will be operational by next year  and will help the Railways lower their carbon footprint and power purchase costs. The Railways consume five billion units of power a year and spend around Rs.5,500 crore on power bills.

The Railways will also seek to generate carbon credits from these projects. Reports indicate that the Railways had already set up a 10.5MW plant in Tamil Nadu and currently save Rs 8 crore on yearly power bills by supplying power to the grid in return for reduced power rates.
